How can I optimize cooling for my scientific or industrial application while conserving energy?

Many refrigeration systems and cooling circulators aren’t very efficient.

Refrigeration systems like those in your home refrigerator or air conditioning unit typically operate at 100% cooling power until they reach the temperature setpoint and shut off. So the system is either 100% on or off. Basic laboratory circulators and chillers operate the same way, which isn’t very efficient.

Suppose you were operating your car using the same on or off principle; you’d press the gas pedal and floor it until you reached your destination, then you’d completely stop. Eventually, you would get to your destination, but your gas mileage would suffer greatly. Another way to think about this is to imagine turning on a light switch; it’s either on or off, but what happens if you add a dimmer switch? Modern dimmer switches decrease the amount of energy flowing to the light bulb, reducing energy consumption and extending the light bulb’s life.

Circulators and chillers with proportional cooling are more efficient and reduce energy consumption.

Now, imagine you had a dimmer-type switch for your laboratory chiller or circulator, one that reduces energy consumption and extends the life of your equipment. Proportional cooling technology is like that dimmer switch; instead of being 100% on or off, it adjusts power based on the external load of your application. Different applications place different demands on the chiller, depending on several variables, including the size of the application vessel, the temperature goal, and the time-to-temperature. For example, suppose you’re controlling two jacketed reactors using the same chiller; there will be a greater demand on the chiller’s cooling capacity, and the proportional cooling technology will adjust accordingly.

Benefits of Proportional Cooling:

  1. It reduces stress on the compressor.
  2. It reduces downtimes and service issues related to compressor issues.
  3. It extends the lifespan of the circulator or temperature control unit.
  4. It reduces heat generation to the environment.
  5. It reduces energy consumption and lowers operating costs.

Find a chiller with energy-saving proportional cooling.

JULABO USA offers numerous models with built-in proportional cooling to help lower energy consumption and operating costs. Many of our Refrigerated Circulators include proportional cooling if the model name has a “P” that indicates proportional cooling. In addition to those models marked with a “P,” the MAGIO, DYNEO, and CORIO 600F, 601F, 900F, and 1000F models also offer proportional cooling. Our PRESTO highly dynamic temperature control systems also provide proportional cooling, as do our FL recirculating chillers, and SemiChill recirculating chillers.

Your JULABO account manager can help you understand all your options and select and size the best cooling equipment for your specific applications. Our senior product manager and application scientist, Mark Diener, is also available to answer questions about optimizing cooling while saving energy; you can also schedule a free consult with Mark directly. With JULABO USA, you never have to go it alone or worry about whether you have the appropriate cooling equipment for your application.
