In this “Question Mark” video about the cannabis workflow, JULABO product manager Mark Diener discusses how to use the FL7006 chiller to remove ethanol after winterization. Once you have an extract, you’ll want to winterize it to remove unwanted plant byproducts such as fats, lipids, and waxes. After that filtration process, you’ll need to remove the remaining ethanol by rotary evaporation or vacuum distillation This distillation process requires a large chiller such as the FL7006. This is a really good chiller for a 50-liter rotary evaporator and provides temperature stability of ± 1/2°C. Watch the video and see this product and more at julabo.us/cannabis.
Overview of the FL7006 Refrigerated Chiller
In this video, Mark Diener, senior product manager for JULABO USA, introduces the FL7006 refrigerated chiller and how it fits into the cannabis workflow. The FL7006 has a temperature range from -20°C to +40°C, with 7 kW of cooling power at 20°C and 3 kW of cooling power at -10°C. It also has a strong 6-bar pump, which you might think is too powerful for a rotovap condenser; however, the unit comes with a manual bypass that allows you to adjust the pressure, and a visual gauge to keep an eye to that pressure. The refrigeration feature incorporates proportional cooling control that adjusts the cooling power based on the external load, meaning the unit won’t be running at 100% capacity, non-stop. The FL7006 is ideal for ethanol removal in combination with a 50-liter rotovap or two 20-liter rotovaps. Remember that most rotovap manufacturers rate their units for a specific evaporation rate per hour; if you go beyond that, you could see it indicated by increasing temperatures on the FL7006.
